What is a Doula?

A Doula is....

An extraordinary person full of bravery, care, strength, and drive to help in the most unforgettable ways. It is a trained professional labor assistant, who offers continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to a mother and her partner before, during, and after childbirth, to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience imaginable. This incredible person helps a woman and her partner understand everything that is to be expected during your entire labor process. Doulas can help you create your entire birth plan and do everything in their power to help it go as planned, because your birth plan is extremely important to them. It does not matter where you are deciding to give birth, whether that be a hospital, birth center, home birth, anywhere you name it, a doula will be there for you and they work as a team will the medical professionals. Nurses will come and go, your OB will come in usually only during the pushing faze, and your midwife has tons of medical work they have to stay on top of, but your doula never leaves your side unless you are wanting some alone time. Your doula is your birth coach and so many other things. This person not only implements comfort techniques to take your pain away, but they help lesson the likely hood of cesareans, low APGAR scores in babies, and reduce the need for medications if the mom doesn't want them! This professional helps with non labor needs too and I'm just touching the surface here on what these people can do for you and your family.

I personally have been up for more than 24 hours helping a mama and her family. I help take care of siblings, I prepare food and make sure everyone is eating staying energized especially mama. I will help reassure dad that Mom is and is going to be ok and give him go to ideas on how he can help her though this all while cheering everyone on for their hard work. I clean up and help things stay clean. Make phone calls to whoever is needed. Create a setting that makes mom most comfortable with candles and low light with soothing sounds in the background. I go on walks with mama and who ever wants to go. I will drive places for forgotten bags or for whatever reason it may be. I can help move your labor along so that it's not dragging out longer than it has to be. As I am currently not a medical professional I offer the best referrals to the best places for any concern you may have. Before, during, and after labor it is common for me to be answering texts or calls in the middle of the night to answer questions, to be a friend and someone who understands everything they are feeling, or if they just want to talk to someone and feel extra loved or special. Because you are and I am here for you. If I am needed, I gladly drop everything I am doing and I'm there for you. Not all moms but a lot, of moms really want to look nice for the birth of their child and for the photos being taken and there is nothing wrong with that. So have done their hair, find special outfits for birthing in, along with nails and make up! I will do whatever the heck you want. If you have never heard of a hip squeeze in labor you have been missing out because they feel so good and they have been known to take all the pain away during a contraction. Doulas can give a hip squeeze for every contraction. I am not afraid to get messy. I have had all kinds of bodily fluids on me and it does not bother me at all neither does blood. Not only have I gone to school for this position, but I have seen it and been through it in so many different ways so I am able to answer any question thrown my way. If for some reason a question has stumped me, you better believe I will be getting the answer for you one way or another. I have seen some sadness after the birthing process has come to an end, so let's keep the happiness of your birth going!
